“Words are like eggs. Once broken, they cannot be put back together’’ is a popular proverb that
emphasizes the import of words and its’ usage. Meanwhile, the use of words is a means of communication that is used daily. How we interpret words is dependent on a whole lot of factors such as the tone of the message, inflection, meaning of the words used and sometimes the person conveying the message.
I remember an event that occurred recently, I was at an ATM point and the two people before me were not as fast as I wanted them to be, I was a lil’ impatient because they were conversing there, but what I didn’t know is that the ATM took a prolonged period to dispense cash.
So I said “Aboki, please be fast.”
Man 1: “se, you know the meaning of Aboki?”
Me: “Yes now, Aboki means “Friend”, I replied. (As at the time of the usage of the word “Aboki’’ I had no shady thoughts in mind. I used it in relation to the man’s ethnic group)
Man 2 angrily replied: “No mind Yoruba people when they talk Aboki na “Mumu” (foolish people)
dem dey talk.”
I was taken aback really.
I learnt a lesson on how one could be the owner of a language and then a perceived implied
meaning by a non-indigene could also affect your interpretation of a word in that language.
This is also a pointer to me that God could actually speak a Word to us, but it can be affected by
our receptibility of such Words. A case in mind is Gideon, God called him a “mighty man of Valor”’.
However, his interpretation of God’s word was beclouded by the predicament He and the Israelites
were experiencing.
It took a further conviction from God before Gideon was able to walk in the fullness of the Words
that God spoke to Him.
How many times has God spoken Words that seemed ‘’impossible’’ in our reasoning and how many
have been dismissed before coming into fruition?… God’s Word can be trusted because He is mindful of what He says at all times. His intentions are pure and He can be relied upon.
“So is my Word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.” Isaiah 55:11
