Have You Thought about Death Recently?

I was at a funeral yesterday and it reminded me of quite a lot of things we often take for granted. We are not designed to live in our bodies forever, but we sometimes act like this is the reality. Life in the body is only a matter of time. If anything really matters while we are in the body, it is what we are able to accomplish for God, ourselves and others.

2 SAMUEL 14:14

“For we will surely die and are like water spilled on the ground which cannot be gathered up again Yet God does not take away life, but plans ways so that the banished one will not be cast out from him.”

Any attempt to take for granted either our accomplishment for God, ourselves or others will not be overlooked when we are dead. What is said about us after our death says a lot about how we spent the life God graced us with. Do not forget, you will not be there to speak at your funeral, but others will say what they thought about you.

At the funeral I attended yesterday, the wonderful man that passed was said to be a prayer warrior, lover of his children, accommodating to several people who were not his biological children, a student of the Bible, a Shepard and not an hireling of the flock God kept in his care, a disciplinarian and one who was not given to hypocrisy and above all a lover of God whose love for God and others kept him at the door of the Church, looking out for passers by to bless at every point in time.

His life according to more than 3 witnesses was all about how he could be a blessing to others, other than how he could get from them. This is the kind of life God expects us to live. We are to make out time for others, be a blessing to others and not just ourselves, immediate or extended family members alone. A life well spent is a life that included people who are not blood relatives in his or her goals daily, weekly, monthly and yearly until the time of death.

God encourages us to choose to attend funerals other than parties where they make merry, because the time spent at a funeral is a time of reflection. It is a time to search our lives and see how well we have lived and what possible positive changes we are expected to make.

ECCLESIASTES 7:1-2

” A good name is better than precious perfume,
And the day of one’s death better than the day of one’s birth.

It is better to go to the house of mourning
Than to go to the house of feasting,
For that [day of death] is the end of every man,
And the living will take it to heart and solemnly ponder its meaning.”

Life is short and there is a need to make the best of the time God allocates to us, so that we can be considered as good stewards of His precious gift of life. If You die today, will you without any doubt make Heaven? This is all that matters most when your life is over.

Do not even be quick to give an answer, because that does not necessarily mean you have the right answer. It is however very easy to have a YES as an answer right now!

ROMANS 10:13

For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

If your sincere answer to the question asked above is NO, all you need to do is call upon the name of the Lord and that is it! It requires no screaming or jumping, but with a sincere heart, simply say:

” Lord Jesus, I know that the life I have is not mine, but You gave it to me. I believe that You died for me and on the third day You rose from the grave. Come into my heart and be my Lord and Saviour. Thank You for I am now a child of the Most high. AMEN.”

If you said that prayer, you are definitely a child of the Living God whose throne is in Heaven and has prepared mansions over there for those who die in Him. Welcome to a new life in Jesus!
