Asking God Questions

When people go through difficult times, no matter how old, or young such people are, they often wonder and ask why God permitted the occurrence of such things . That this question pops up in our minds does not necessarily mean we doubt God’s role as a caring Father. It only proves that we are mere mortals whose understanding of God is so limited we can be blinded to His unfailing love, as a result of what we are faced with or how hard some situations are.

Recently, I was moved to ask a question I have not asked in a very long time. “Why did God allow this to happen?” Some people think it is a big deal to ask God questions when unpleasant things happen to us or someone dear to us. This is sometimes based on  the understanding of the fact that God is Unquestionable.

That God is Unquestionable does not however mean He is Unapproachable. God is a Father who can be approached and asked questions, yet there is a need for a right manner of approach, considering that He is God, despite whatever we feel at the moment and the outcome of anything and everything that comes our way. (PSALM 100:3)

A lot of times, we try to hide or run away from our hurt, pain and displeasure, all in the name of not wanting to ask God questions. But the truth is God knows our frame, and He is always willing to reveal the WHY of whatever comes our way, if He thinks there is a need to do so, which is where He being the Almighty God comes to play.

Sometimes, we ask and get answers expressly regarding the WHY of a situation, at other times however, we only see the manifestation of the reason in the place of what God brings out of such situations. An example of the  latter can be seen in the case of Jesus when He was on the Cross and asked God a question that was not answered at the time, but was later answered in the place of what came out of the situation.

MATTHEW 27:46

“And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?”

PHILIPPIANS 2:9

“Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name.”

If there is anyone recorded in the Bible as a proof of the fact that asking God questions in itself is not a problem, it is the Psalmist. King David was always asking God Why, How, When, Where?…. But his manner of approach was always that of humility and a display of honor for God .

PSALM 13:1- 6

How long wilt thou forget me, O Lord? for ever? how long wilt thou hide thy face from me?

How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart daily? how long shall mine enemy be exalted over me?

 Consider and hear me, O Lord my God: lighten mine eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death;

Lest mine enemy say, I have prevailed against him; and those that trouble me rejoice when I am moved.

But I have trusted in thy mercy; my heart shall rejoice in thy salvation.

I will sing unto the Lord, because he hath dealt bountifully with me.”

In the above text, David started by asking questions, but ended with worship, not minding how difficult things looked at the time. Approaching God rudely will not solve any problem, neither will avoiding asking Him make things better.

God knows our frame and He is a Father that pities his children that are weak in knowledge and teaches them. He is also a God who knows how little we can bear.

PSALM 103:14

“For He knows our frame; he remembers that we are dust.”

If Jesus at the point of death asked the Father a question, what makes you think you are not permitted to do the same as His child? The question however is are you a child of God? How much honor do you give Him as you ask questions, despite how hurt or wounded you are?

MAY GOD WIPE AWAY ALL OUR TEARS, COMFORT ALL THOSE WHO MOURN AT THIS TIME  AND TURN ALL THAT THE ENEMY THOUGHT FOR EVIL INTO GOOD.
