My Word Fast Story.
Is it just me or being a Christian seems to be harder in some regions? I mean, have you seen Lagos drivers? Even more have you seen a typical conductor- passenger fracas? Living in a commercial hub like Lagos could be really overwhelming. It’s so easy to get too busy and live through life so hurriedly that we forget our assignments and the way Jesus wants us to live.
I remember I once started a Word fast. A Word fast is when you dedicate a particular period to making constant confessions about your life and God’s promises for you while abstaining from using your tongue for anything negative.
It was day 15 of my word fast and I had not felt so excited in a long while. It was like being refreshed and reassured like never before. I felt so much power in my ability to speak into my life. I felt no doubt and lived no doubt. It was truly a remarkable time in my Christian journey. However Lagos happened.
It was a rainy day, and I kept telling God while walking to my bus stop ‘God today your baby is dressed really beautifully, I really don’t want to get wet even if I don’t have an umbrella’. Impossible right?
It had begun to drizzle just few minutes after I told God my wish and I didn’t feel all that confident in my prayer. So I walked even faster, and before I crossed to the other side of the road, I had hailed the bus opposite the road not wanting to miss out on the opportunity to get shielded from the rain. All I could think of was the fact that I wanted to safely be in a bus before the downpour.
So I rushed into the bus, and the Holy Spirit asked, ’Daughter, didn’t you trust that I would shield you from the rain?’ I was confused because I was safely seated in a bus by then. I soon forgot about the question the Holy Spirit had asked me as I dozed off on my seat. The conductor eventually woke me up to pay my bus fare which I already did. So I explained that I had already done that and the person seated next to me also confirmed it so did but the conductor refused to concede.
Before I could say “Jack”, all hell had broken lose. He began to hurl insulting words at me. I tried keeping my calm, I really did until my emotions took over. I forgot my Word fast and said my own fair share of mean words to the conductor and even the driver was not spared.
They eventually let me down at my office and as I stepped into the office, it began to rain heavily. I broke down in tears that morning not because I was bothered about the conductor but because I had broken my Word fast.
Wouldn’t God understand that Lagos is indeed a funny city? How could I hold my tongue? Shouldn’t the standard be lower for those who live in Lagos? I asked questions I had answers to. God’s standards doesn’t change for people or places. Our situation or circumstances may seem tougher but God expects that we still shine. He expects that no matter what happens, we do all things according to what Jesus would have done.
Therefore we must do all it takes, embark on Word fasts, have accountability partners, join groups of like-minded people who have faced or are facing such situations, do all you must to be who God wants you to be.
You can do all things, including surviving in Lagos “through Christ who strengthens you.”
Stay Safe.
