It is often said that “Talk is cheap”. Anyone can actually talk, but in doing is the real deal. Jesus- our Perfect Example was not just a Talker, but a Doer of all that He taught, said and commanded .
On the night He was betrayed, He gathered His Disciples together and they had a final meal that is called ” The Last Super”. It was known to Jesus as they ate that after that meal, He was to face an horrific experience that will lead to His death, yet He was mindful of others in His prayers that night. ( JOHN 17).
Jesus’s decision to pray for others despite His own foreseen sorrow and pain, was a pointer at the fact that He was a Doer of what He taught others to do. In John 17, as He ate what He knew was His last meal with His Disciples before His Crucifixion, He prayed for Himself, His Disciples and all Believers ( as many as will believe the written Word of God and also believe in Christ).
Jesus taught us to give thanks in all situations( good, bad and ugly) and He did the same as He ate His last meal. He could have decided to just ask that God strike the betrayer(who was actually with Him at the table) down before he could carry out his plan, but that was not in anyway one of His request. He instead began with thanksgiving, despite the unpleasant situation that was ahead of Him.
Luke 22: 14-20 (NKJV)
” When the hour had come, He sat down, and the twelve apostles with Him. Then He said to them, “With fervent desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; for I say to you, I will no longer eat of it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”
Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, “Take this and divide it among yourselves; for I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”
And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”
Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you.”
At the tomb of Lazarus- His dear friend, who had been dead for 4 days, He proved Himself as the One who does not just talk, but does as He says or commands us to, by giving thanks ahead of making any request, not minding how painful it was that his friend had to taste
JOHN 11:38-43 (NKJV)
“Then Jesus, again groaning in Himself, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay against it. Jesus said, “Take away the stone.”
Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said to Him, “Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days.”
Jesus said to her, “Did I not say to you that if you would believe you would see the glory of God?”Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying. And Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, “Father, I thank you that You have heard Me. And I know that You always hear Me, but because of the people who are standing by I said this, that they may believe that You sent Me.”Now when He had said these things, He cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come forth!”
Our Perfect example- Jesus Christ was a Doer of what He taught. He did, just as He commanded us to. He gave thanks in His darkest hours. When confronted with heartbreaking situations, gruesome events, and overwhelming storms, what proceeds out of your mouth first? Thanksgiving or complaint….?
